Recap: A Friendly Saturday Morning DC Trail Run

About 20 A Listers braved near freezing temps for Saturday’s “Friendly Morning Trail Run.”

The air temperature during the run was 36°F (2.2°C), which if you remember from 2nd grade science class technically counts as “above freezing” (with freezing of course referring to the point at which liquid water becomes a solid). But a constantly blowing 20.7 mph (33.3 km/h) wind made it feel ten degrees colder… which explains why everyone was shivering so much in the parking lot!

The Potomac Heritage Trail is a huge network of trails (over 770 miles worth!) located in the District, Maryland and Virginia. The section of trail we ran on was on the Virginia side, sandwiched between the GW Parkway and Potomac, and offered great views of the river. The Potomac was looking unusually clear and blue, but with the wind whipping up waves I had little desire to run home and return with a kayak (last Sunday’s excursion at Burke Lake should counter any desire for cold water paddling just a bit longer).

From what I saw, the Potomac Heritage Trail was indeed a beautiful, technical trail complete with rock scrambles and at least one water fall of sorts. Saturday’s run was an out and back with the back part made extra technical on account of the mud. Even from 93,000,000 miles away the sun was warm enough to melt the ground and create plenty of slick patches. Good times!
