First Frost

My treat for waking up before sunrise this morning… For waking up, for getting out of bed and out the door… For noticing the frosty fields as I sped past on the highway…
The first frost of the season blanketed the fields near my office this morning and though I had an 8am meeting (a meeting I was responsible for leading) I quickly calculated that yes, I probably had a few minutes to try and capture the scene that lay before me.
Pulling off the highway I switched from Morning Edition to the Eddie Vedder Into the Wild soundtrack that has lately received heavy play time in my car and served as partial muse for my recent outings. In the passenger seat to my right my camera bag lay open… the camera was on, the lens cap was off, memory cards were formatted and ready.
I sped down a stretch of country black top and reached a spot where the trees lining the field opened up providing access. Not wanting to tempt fate I left the car running while I shot. It’s a reliable car for sure, but with only minutes to work and being miles from the office I left nothing to chance.
With the sun about to peek over the horizon, I worked quickly in the gloamy light, shooting with the camera low to the ground and playing with aperture settings and depth of field. Afraid of losing track of time I forced myself back into the car after only a few minutes and headed grudgingly back to reality. A last glance at the fields, now just a blur out my window, confirmed my decision to leave as the frost was already beginning to fade away into the morning sunlight.
