DCist Photo of the Day: Banana Bar

Banana Bar, originally uploaded by Brian Knight Photography.

Turns out I was not the only one who was more than a little weirded out after witnessing the scene above at the National Zoo’s Zoo Lights on Sunday.

I took this photo and a short video and then tweeted the following:

Person in panda suit in giant snow globe dancing to xmas music borders on clown scary. 7:37 PM Dec 14th from Twittelator

Today the photo made DCist PoTD with this description by Heather:

At first glance this is quite the adorable scene: kiddies, pandas, winter celebrations. Except…what is going on here? Is that panda trapped inside that snow globe, with the dirty gym towel instead of snow, begging those kids to let him out? Couldn’t they just let him prance around with some fake antlers so he could actually take photos with the kidlets instead of locking him away behind plastic where he can only longingly touch paws, like a monthly jailhouse visit? So many questions. Brian Knight Photography found this sweet, strange little scene at Zoo Lights, which starts again on Thursday and runs through December 30, except Christmas.

The scene leaves much to one’s own interpretation and apparently many, many jokes can be made (as seen in the comments and elsewhere on the internets)…

Oh that’s funny, I missed your tweet about it. Clown scary is right. I hope those children aren’t scarred.

Like that one person said on DCist… The children weren’t all that scared, but man, even from a distance I looked at that globe and dancing panda and was like, WTF?!

Evocative, disturbing, absurd. Everything art is supposed to be..
