EX2 has posted their race calendar for 2010! Next year EX2 will produce 21 races that break down into the following categories:
I’ve just gone through the list of races and created an iCal file that you can easily import into things like iCal or your iPhone or even your Google Calendar!.
Because there wasn’t much going on this past Saturday (that’s a touch of sarcasm btw), I agreed to help cover a 5K race up at the Reston Town Center.
The NOVA Girls on the Run program (read about it here) is really great and has just exploded in popularity over the past couple years. It was definitely worth the 5:55am wake up call necessary to get up to Reston in time for the festivities. Around 4,000 people registered for the 5K race and despite chilly temps and a bit of rain, the streets and sidewalks were filled with was tons smiling, excited faces.
It seems lately I can’t go anywhere without running into people I know… Jenn, of course, was there in her official capacity as Executive Director of the program and I knew Kristin was a coach for one of the local schools. But then there was also Liza, and Scud, and Vergil, all with running partners and later during the race I saw Bill and Katie too (oh and supposedly Elaine was out there as well, but I think she got sent to the hinterlands). And yes, I realise that I knew maybe as many as .02% of the people there, but it was a lot more than I was expecting to see on a cold and dreary Saturday morning.
The morning was great and I’m already looking forward to next spring’s Daisy Dash. If you’re into running even a little bit you should look into this program a bit closer.

Race shirts. I have a lot of them. In fact, because I cover around 20 a year, most of my t-shirts are race t-shirts. It’s gotten to the point where I’ve had to buy more hangars for all the shirts and now for some races, I don’t even bother to get a shirt. Today though, today I wanted the shirt, and not just because I was actually racing. Today I wanted the shirt for Mr. Pig.

I know, this photo is black and white (and even if it was in color you would not see a single person dressed in red, or a dress), but it signifies the end of another labourous process of photo culling and editing and culling and… get the picture?

Lots and lots of photos were taken as I followed the pack around the city this afternoon. Expect to see around 60 posted online in the next few days. Of course, there might be a delay as I still have to sort like 5,000 photos from last Sunday’s VentureQuest. And I really haven’t forgotten about the Labour Day wedding photos. I swear. I actually processed a batch Friday night.

The fun was just beginning as the sun set behind these two racers Saturday night. Having already portaged, paddled, trekked, biked, paddled and/or riverboarded, and biked again, racers were then faced with on O-course that would be dealt with in the darkness of night.
Many, many photos were taken and should be posted in the next day or so over at Will Ramos Photography.

Awoke early Saturday morning (it was not yet 6am) and drove up to Rocky Gap State Park in western Maryland for the third edition of the Rocky Gap Adventure Race, organised by local race production company EX2 Adventures.
Mother Nature was kind enough to get all of the rain out of her system the day before so photographers and racers alike were treated to a race course covered by bright blue skies (and 20 mph winds, and burn inducing sun rays, and pockets of standing water, and oh yeah, sub-60 degree lake water cold enough to take your breath away if you opted for one of the swims — or managed to dump your boat!).
For the photographer, the day after a race like Rocky Gap means sorting though photos. Lots and lots of photos. Three thousand seven hundred and fifty-nine photos to be exact. And mind you, that’s just what I shot. Will was also out on the course, humping up the mountain between checkpoints 8 & 9 mostly, and I’m sure he shot a comparable number, maybe even enough to fill his 8GB compact flash card.
Sorting photos means (among other things) inspecting each image to see that it is in focus and decently composed. In about the time that it took the middle of the pack teams to complete the race course we are able to make our final cuts. Then my photos are merged with Will’s photos and the hard part begins… Someone has to then take all of the photos and get them ready for posting to the website, a process that is only somewhat automated but which I do not have the words for tonight.

Part 11 of our 31 Part Series “Better Know the 2007 Adventure Racing Season” found us back at Prince William Forest Park located just across the street (if by street you mean highway, and if by highway you mean Interstate 95) from the Crossroads of the Marine Corps, Quantico.
