Explore

As you can see, I don’t get photos in Flickr’s Explore very often. I’m not even sure it means a whole lot. Or rather, I am secure enough in my photography to know that not getting in to Explore is not a commentary on all the other photos that get posted to Flickr. In anycase, I know there is some sort of mystical algorithym populating the Explore pages, but it has always seemed to me to be random.

In any case, it was nice that “Zoom” was chosen as photo of the day on DCist and it is neat to see people responding to “A River Runs Through It.” I wish I could thank that guy for deciding to go fishing on Sunday or for choosing to change position at just the moment that I decided to take some pictures which allowed me to get the waves radiating away from his body.

Dcist Photo of the Day Meta Madness: Open to Interpretation

My Zombie Bride once more graced the pages of DCist today!

In case you haven’t noticed DCist Exposed opens this Friday and to help promote the event the good folks at DCist (thanks Eric, thanks Heather!) are using some of the homemade posters for PotD. This photo was PotD back on Halloween last year and was then chosen to be in the 2008 Exposed show.

I was showing this image to a coworker today and he had an interesting interpretation that I’d not thought of before… Basically, he was wondering about this zombie bride, wandering the seemingly deserted National Mall and holding a protest sign demanding brains… My coworker wondered if this was not some sort of statement on Washington itself? A hungry zombie bride means there are no brains in Washington…

DCist Exposed Photography Show

DCist Exposed Entry: Zombie Bride, originally uploaded by Brian Knight Photography.

I’m quite happy to announce that “Zombie Bride” was selected for the second annual DCist Exposed Photography Show! Congrats to everyone who entered.  Every time I went through the entires I came away with a new favourite.  I can’t imagine how difficult it was to judge this show.

from DCist…

As we suspected, it was a near impossible job deciding which photos were the best of the best from the lot of contenders you threw our way. Over 250 people entered the 2008 DCist Exposed contest and gave us 601 original images from which to choose. We mulled and pondered and tore our hair out a little bit, but please follow the jump (if you haven’t already) to find 47 incredible photos that we think capture Washington, D.C. and the surrounding region with an eye trained to find the rich culture too often hidden by the capital’s bureaucratic image.

Mark your calendars for the opening reception on March 7 at Civilian Art Projects in Penn Quarter. After we bring down the house on Friday, we’ll be following it up with to-be-announced event during the week to further celebrate both the winners and everyone who takes up a camera and contributes to DCist.

Note to Self: Really, it’s not for porn at all

This credit card transaction will appear on your bill as “HEATHER”.

DCist Exposed II is coming! Now which photos should I submit?

Happy Halloween!

This brilliant photo was left out of our Zombie Lurch ‘07 slideshow on Monday, and thank goodness, because this has Photo of the Day written all over it. Flickr user outdoor_type gives this zombie bride an apocalyptic sepia toned home, where she can rightly protest the lack of edible brainz next to our seemingly abandoned national treasure. EXIF.

 Happy German Reunification Day!

It’s October, friends. Can you smell the pumpkin pie yet? Flickr user outdoor_type was out in Herndon, Va. this weekend and found his first pumpkin of the season, getting some great depth of field on this pretty iron bike outside of a soon-to-be bed and breakfast owned by some friends. Guess it’s time to start scoping out local pumpkin fields — where will you be going for your Halloween gourd this year? EXIF.

 Happy Brazilian Independence Day!

Who can resist the Hammer? We’re glad some of you took our advice yesterday and went to see him live for free at the Woodrow Wilson Plaza … so the rest of us could stay home and just enjoy the great photos. This close-up by Captain Easychord almost nailed it for Photo of the Day, but we couldn’t resist this black and white version (that’s Hammer in the center with the sunglasses) after photographer outdoor_type pointed out the man in the throes of hysteria on the right side. Click through to see the notes. EXIF.

Happy Valentines Day!

This lovely portrait was taken by Flickr user outdoor_type, who went indoors to watch the Washington Capitals game. The light reflecting on the side of her face from the ice below seems the perfect solemn contrast to what was probably a messy (and losing) match below.
